SO, YOU WANT TO BE A CHANGEMAKER: START HERE

Social Impact Movement is launching the Sustainable Development Pledge for businesses in Miami

“A deep sense of morality, environmental consciousness, high level of empathy, and human solidarity. This is my portrait of a sustainable leader of the future. Start with you! The changemaker journey requires you to take ownership of your present, creating the future you'd like to live in today.”

Meet Claudia Akel: daughter of a Syrian immigrant family, she was born and raised in Brazil, then lived and worked across Latin America before settling in Miami. Under her passionate leadership, Social Impact Movement, the local force for good, mobilizes and educates individuals, businesses, and government to take action for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) in Miami.

In the world of startups, incorporating policies and practices for environmental, social, and governance issues is often seen as something for later-stage ventures or corporations with the well-developed Corporate Social Responsibility programs.

This notion must be challenged, says Claudia. It's far easier and more effective to integrate the UN SDGs from the beginning. This sustainable canvas creates space for the next generation of unicorns to be diverse and inclusive, conscious of their employees' health and safety, and thus better serve their communities and the environment.

“The 17 Sustainable Development Goals, with a vision of ending poverty, protecting the planet and ensuring that all people enjoy peace and prosperity, provide a robust framework for addressing many of the inequities and, what’s more important, tracking the positive impact. Miami is still lagging in this global conversation compared to other similar big cities in the US and the world. But we can move from local stagnation to true progress,” continues Claudia.
“We have an ocean of opportunities to unlock a better future for Miami. The amazing diversity we found here is, in fact, one of the most powerful ingredients for advancing toward a more equitable and resilient world.”

This summer, Social Impact Movement is launching an ambitious campaign, the SDG Impact Pledge, calling businesses in the Greater Miami Area to choose one Sustainable Development Goal and sign a pledge committing to help drive progress towards building resilient and responsible eco-system.

“Local businesses – from real estate to hospitality – can play an essential role by aligning strategies, new products, manufacturing, and governance with the SDGs, improving the lives of their workforce, and the community they serve,” adds Claudia.
